German Foreign Minister Baerbock names conditions for Christmas ceasefire in Ukraine

18.12.2022, Berlin.

In an interview with the Bild am Sonntag German newspaper, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock dispelled the illusions of a ceasefire or peace in Ukraine by Christmas.

When asked about a truce in Ukraine by Christmas, Baerbock said that Russian President Vladimir Putin should have ordered the Russian Armed Forces to retreat. The German minister warned against accepting Russia’s conditions. According to the minister, this would not end the horrors unfolding in Ukraine.

“There is no electricity, no heating, and even international aid does not arrive,” Baerbock complained. The German foreign minister also expressed regret that she saw no “clear signs” that Russian troops were retreating.

National Security Advisor to the Vice President of the United States Jake Sullivan said on December 16 that the time for diplomatic negotiations on Ukraine had not yet come. A convincing negotiation requires military success, Sullivan said.
