The involvement of Western countries in the conflict in Ukraine was the reason for the appointment of the commander of the united group of troops in the area of the special military operation. The Chairman of the State Council of Crimea Vladimir Konstantinov wrote this on his Telegram channel on October 10.
He said that the appointment of Sergey Surovikin is a consequence of the transition of the conflict to another level. Konstantinov pinned his hopes on the general himself to end divisions between the generals and ensure unified actions, and expressed confidence that Surovikin would be up to the task.
“Why didn’t such an appointment follow earlier? I think initially our leadership thought this [such appointment] would not be required to solve the tasks in Ukraine. It was probably assumed that neither mobilization nor intensification of the military-industrial production and many other things would be required but it turned out to be the other way around,” Konstantinov said.
He suggested that these measures would not have been needed if Western countries had not also joined the fight in Ukraine against Russia.
“It has become obvious that without additional straining of forces of our state, our entire society, the set goals cannot be achieved. Hence the whole set of measures that have been put into effect in recent weeks,” he wrote.
As a consequence, more effective management of the special military operation is also required, the Chairman of the Crimean parliament explained.
“Here it is introduced in the person of General Surovikin. Let’s wish him strength and good luck. And, in the end, victory,” Konstantinov added.
On October 8, it became known that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu appointed General Surovikin as commander of the group of troops in Ukraine. In 2017, Surovikin was awarded the title of Hero of Russia for his services during the military operation in Syria.
