Iran is working on a plan to connect the country’s power grid with that of Russia and other Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states via Turkmenistan, Iranian Deputy Minister of Energy for International Affairs Mohammad Ali Farahnakian told IRNA on October 9.

Farahnakian noted that the plan allows the exchange of electricity between the SCO member states. The plan was agreed upon at the II Caspian Economic Forum, he specified.

The Deputy Minister stressed that the former Soviet republics, members of the SCO, have the infrastructure, allowing to exchange energy. Iran, on the other hand, needs to build a third line to connect its power grid with Turkmenistan in addition to the existing two, the Iranian official added.

In September at the regular SCO summit, it was decided to accept Iran as a full member of the organization, and Tehran signed a memorandum of accession.
