Russia’s Federation Council unanimously ratifies the admission of new regions into the Russian Federation

The Federation Council ratified the treaties on the admission of four new regions to Russia on October 4, the press service of the Federation Council reported.

Members of the Federation Council unanimously approved the admission of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions to Russia. Two new republics and two regions will be created in the Russian Federation as of the date of admission.

The new regions will retain their former names. The heads of the subjects will receive the status of governors. Acting governors will be appointed by Russian President Vladimir Putin within 10 days of the adoption. The governments of the new regions will be created by the acting governors after their appointment.

Borders of regions bordering foreign countries will become the borders of the Russian Federation.
