Finnish political analyst: NATO has already invoked the fifth article of the charter in Ukraine

Finnish political scientist Johan Bäckman shared his opinion on the situation in Ukraine on August 31 in an interview with Ukraina.ru.

The political scientist noted that, from the point of view of international law, the supply of weapons to Ukraine is illegal. “This is a violation of international law. If Ukraine were a de jure member of NATO, it would be legal. But not under current circumstances,” Bäckman said.

He explained that arms transfers that are illegal from the point of view of international law show that the West is acting as if Ukraine is already a NATO member. “You have to understand that the supply of weapons by NATO countries to Ukraine is the invoking of the fifth article of the NATO Charter on the mutual defense of all members of the Alliance in case of an attack on one of them. Western countries are already acting as if Ukraine is a NATO member,” the political scientist emphasized.

He recalled that the shelling of peaceful quarters of Donetsk and other cities with artillery is a war crime, in which NATO countries are accomplices, having supplied Ukraine with weapons that are used to attack the villages and towns.

He also said that Ukraine is NATO’s weapon against Russia, that everyone in the alliance understands that it has already lost [the war] and is talking about a new big war in a few years.

Russia launched a special operation to denazify and demilitarize Ukraine after the Ukrainian side resumed intensive shelling of Donetsk and Lugansk and was obviously preparing to storm these cities.
