Kurginyan: Mistaken predictions of special operation duration result from assessment that “we are sitting pretty”

The opinion that the special operation in Ukraine would be long and very difficult met astonishment among many Russian loyalists, said philosopher, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement on August 18 in a new issue of his original program Destiny published on the movement’s YouTube channel.

According to Kurginyan, the Russian society cannot be lacking a demand for understanding the reasons of the current events, and the professional duty of analysts is to facilitate the search for this meaning and finding relations, means of understanding, and integrating all this into processes.

“Many have relatives or friends participating in the conflict. The conflict brings not only victims among the participants, it also brings victims among civilians. Many refugees are trying to understand its nature and its future. From time to time, the conflict extends to the territory of the Russian Federation, although not too seriously so far,” the political scientist indicated.

Meanwhile, an estimate remains very popular until recently among the guardians that now, after the “troubled 1990s” are gone, we are “sitting pretty,” Kurginyan noted.

Sergey Kurginyan reminded that, in view of the acuity of the current situation, he immediately after the start of the special operation refused to discuss any inevitable mistakes of the unprecedentedly daring initiative called special operation.

The political scientist pointed out that he never thought that all the positive changes that took place after the so-called “troubled 1990s” were an inflection point, in contrast to the guardians, who believe that after 1990s they are “sitting pretty;” this is why he immediately said that the special operation would be long and very difficult.

“I heard about ‘sitting pretty’ from so many people over the past two decades. In the offices of the Kremlin, they spoke about this passionately and with unstinting conviction. As well as in many other high-ranking offices.

If someone really believes that a ‘sitting pretty’ situation has really formed during the post-Yeltsin period, including the situation in economy, the new social reality, and the condition of our armed forces, they really must, based on their unrealistically positive estimate, their concept etc., insist that the special operation in Ukraine would be fast and triumphant,” the political scientist explained.

Kurginyan reminded that he has always sounded the alarm regarding the excessively optimistic view of the post-Yeltsin reality, and that over the entire post-Yeltsin he has straightforwardly said that the avalanche-like regress launched by Yeltsin was not overcome, but it was retarded.

“And that this, I must stress this again, saving retardation of regress, without which would would have already lost out country, must not be confused with an actual strategic inflection point after which the regress would be completely overcome but not just retarded,” the political scientist noted.

According to Kurginyan, we are far from anything like the prosperity of “sitting pretty”, or, rather, actual overcoming of the regress. It remains lacking both in our peaceful life and in the combat effectiveness of our armed forces. Ukraine, in contrast to Russia, has “one dark, extremely mean, but sufficient advantage.”

“Ukraine, in contrast to us, has managed to perform an ideological mobilization of its population, while we neither wanted to nor could perform such a mobilization,” Kurginyan concluded.
