Is it secret talks? Germans argue why Schröder visits Moscow

26.07.2022, Berlin.

The controversy over the reasons for former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder’s decision to spend his vacation in Moscow arose among German users of the social network Twitter on July 26.

The debate erupted after a correspondent of the German TV channel NTV met Schröder in Moscow. Schröder told him that he was in Moscow “on vacation for several days.” The correspondent’s observation about the proximity of Schröder’s hotel to the headquarters of the Russian oil company Rosneft surprised the former German chancellor. “Really? Oh, indeed, you’re right,” he reacted.

Twitter user Andy Pretzsch questioned whether Schroeder really went to Moscow on vacation. “Maybe Schröder is doing some negotiations for Scholz. Why else would he be in Moscow?” he wrote.

“Maybe he is negotiating. When he was chancellor, such things were discussed at the highest level, but with a dysfunctional government in Germany this is impossible!,” user Thomas Bude supported him.

After the start of the special operation for the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, Schröder spoke in favor of a diplomatic solution to the situation and and possible negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The former chancellor added, however, that he left the board of directors of Gazprom.
