Opinion: Poland would like to be a regional center of power

08.07.2022, Moscow.

It appears that Poland would like to become a regional center of power. Only, Warsaw is in bitter disputes with Germany and is completely submissive to the US, writes the Essence of Time newspaper in an editorial called Giving up Guilt.

The Wall Street Journal writes that the population of Eastern Europe is beginning to turn away from the ruling pro-Western politicians. Flying blue and yellow flags in support of Ukraine on city streets is one thing. Asking Eastern Europeans to carry forward long-term financial losses for the sake of Ukraine is a completely different matter.

It was noted that a fragile coalition government is teetering on the verge of collapse in Slovakia. A disagreement on the issues of anti-Russian sanctions is the reason. The people of the Czech Republic began to turn away from the pro-European ruling party. The Bulgarian government also received a vote of no confidence after a lengthy budget dispute.

The desire of French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to return to partnership with Russia could lead to an increased influence of Eastern European countries under the leadership of Poland in the EU, writes a political analyst Eoin Drea in an article for Foreign Policy magazine.

Paris and Berlin’s position on this issue has become a reason for a significant distrust of them on the part of the Eastern European members of the EU. In the meantime, Poland is playing a leading role in supporting Ukraine.

If Eastern European countries fail to overcome France and Germany’s inaction, they will move towards closer cooperation with the US and the UK, stressed the analyst. Clearly, Poland would like to become a regional center of power, but Warsaw is in bitter disputes with Germany and completely submissive to the US.
