08.07.2022, Donetsk.

The moratorium on capital punishment, which was effective in the DPR, has been lifted by a decision of the Council of the DPR, the press service of the Republic’s Parliament reported on July 8.

The bill was adopted at two readings at the current plenary session of the Council of the DPR.

The Chairperson of the Committee for the Criminal and Administrative Law of the People’s Council Elena Shishkina noted that capital punishment can only be used for “the most serious crimes against life as well as for certain crimes committed in time of war or under combat conditions.”

According to the press service of the Parliament, the lifting of the moratorium will “become a deterring factor against the most serious crimes (especially crimes against humanity).” During the special operation in the DPR, several death sentences have already been given to foreign mercenaries captured in Mariupol who fought for the Ukrainian army.
