Russia is demonstrating the rest of the world the vector of a free and sovereign development for many decades to come, Chairman of the Russian Historical Society (RHS), Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation Sergey Naryshkin said on April 11 at the opening ceremony of the historical and documentary exhibition Peter the Great and his Era in the Exhibition Hall of the Federal Archives.

The exhibition celebrates the 350th birthday of the first Russian emperor Peter the Great.

“In this anniversary year, in the year of the 350th birthday of Peter the Great, Russia is again fighting for its historical future, and it is courageously and decisively showing the whole world the vector of a free and sovereign development for many decades to come,” Naryshkin said.

“Undoubtedly, Russia will ensure security, prosperity and dignity for its citizens as well as all those who chose to join Russia on its path to the stated objectives,” he noted.

Naryshkin told that Peter the Great’s period was a pivotal stage that divided Russia’s history to “before” and “after.”

“Cut off the seas, weakened by internal strife, Russia desperately needed a breath of new life. <…> He devoted himself to Russia in order to change its destiny, to save it from fading away, from enslavement, and from disintegration,” the RHS chairman said.

He made a special focus on the battle of Poltava, one of the greatest Russia’s victories of Peter the Great’s period, and he encouraged the audience to imagine how Peter would judge his descendants’ achievements, “I think he would spin in his grave if he learned what the descendants of the glorious Zaporozhian Cossacks have turned these lands into over the past three decades. The day before the battle of Poltava, Peter addressed his army with the words, ‘You must know that Peter does not value his life, but Russia must live.’”

Naryshkin called these words a moral will for all the descendants, “to protect our Motherland as our greatest value.”
