Fear of the USA dominates the European political elite. Opinion

Despite the fact that it will be extremely difficult for Europe to do without Russian gas, if the escalation grows, Europe may reduce its purchases, economist and president of the Center for Infrastructure Economics Vladimir Kosoy said in a commentary for Rossa Primavera News Agency on March 25.

“I think that Europe can seriously reduce the volume of purchases of Russian gas. Or begin to buy Russian gas, let’s say, through third countries, through Turkey,” the expert said.

According to the scientist, the main point in making these decisions, will be the level of threat, following a particular step.

“If they think that maintaining trade relations is a big threat, they can take the most unexpected decisions, including those that bring them great economic losses,” the economist said.

There is no doubt that “a break in relations would have the gravest consequences for the European economy.” But the extremely grave consequences will be caused by “the things that have been done now.”

This indicates that Europe is ready to act to its own detriment, Kosoy notes, and the detriment is not stopping European politicians. The question is how far they are ready to go, and what are they most afraid of – the dissatisfaction of their citizens or anger on the part of the hegemon [the USA].
