CDU in Berlin decides to destroy the monument to Ernst Thälmann for the sake of Ukraine

25.03.2022, Berlin.

The CDU faction of Berlin’s Pankow district council will apply for the removal of a monument to the famous German communist Ernst Thälmann, faction member David Paul said, the German newspaper Berliner Morgenpost reported on March 22.

According to the politician, the CDU will apply for exclusion of the Thälmann monument from the list of historical sites in Berlin. In the future, the monument must be dismantled and melted down, and the value of the metal obtained is planned to be donated to help Ukraine.

The monument in honor of the leader of the Communist Party of Germany in the 1930s Ernst Thälmann was erected in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district by Soviet sculptor Lev Kerbel in 1986 to mark the centennial of the politician’s birth.

Ernst Thälmann was arrested on March 3, 1933, a few days after the Reichstag fire. After 11 years of imprisonment, he was shot in the Buchenwald concentration camp in 1944.

For the moment, the CDU initiative is unlikely to receive sufficient support in the Pankow district council and the Berlin senate committee on culture. However, the very attempt to destroy the monument in connection with the situation in Ukraine speaks volumes.

Ernst Thälmann was a fierce anti-fascist and waged a desperate struggle against Hitler’s NSDAP. The destruction of his monument has a deep symbolic meaning in the context of the elimination of any anti-fascist resistance in Europe.

As the experience of post-Soviet Ukraine and, before that, the experience of Nazi Germany showed, the Nazis feel quite comfortable under the guise of democracy. European countries are actually encouraging the participation of the ultra-right in the Ukrainian conflict on the side of the Bandera Nazis.

Now we can see how the entire architecture of the confrontation between Europe and Russia of the mid-20th century, based on the fascist ideology, is being recreated. Only the main enemy is declared not Jews, but Russians. In this situation, the monuments to the fighters against fascism, especially the Soviet ones, are very disturbing.

If this process is not stopped, its final chord will be the destruction of the monument to the Warrior-Liberator in Treptow Park in Berlin.
