Chief Doctor of DPR Hospital: Ukraine does not consider Mariupol residents as its own

23.03.2022, Donetsk.

Ukraine does not recognize civilians in Mariupol as its own, and therefore the nationalists either hide behind them or shoot them, Aleksandr Marunchenko, head of the Novoazovsk city hospital, told reporters in a commentary on March 23.

The head of the hospital, which has been located in the area under the control of the DPR since 2014, opined that when Russia planned a military special operation to demilitarize Ukraine, it already had experience with the Syrian operation. The doctor noted that in Syria during the Russian operation to liberate Syria, even outright terrorists allowed civilians to leave dangerous places where combat could errupt.

“There, even the members of the ISIL (organization banned in the Russian Federation) perceived the civilian population as their own population. As their own. They let them out. And then the Russian Federation was already mopping it [towns and cities from the militants] all up. Ukraine does not perceive the city of Mariupol and its residents as its own. I don’t know… The concept of ‘human shield’ was voiced. To tell people, “Go ahead,” and then shoot them in the back? There’s probably nothing more despicable,” Marunchenko explained.

The doctor explained that two weeks ago the Novoazovsk hospital, which he heads, received mostly people with bullet wounds.

“People were passing in cars or walking, and they were shot in the back,” Marunchenko reported.

Recently, however, the situation has worsened, according to the chief doctor.

“Now the situation is changing… Apparently, people who have been sitting in basements for up to three weeks are breaking out and coming to us. Consequently, all their chronic illnesses haven’t improved or become better because of that. Plus, I understand that they are still being shot in the back by snipers. They are being shot at from automatic grenade launchers and AGS. And they are shot at from various multiple rocket launchers and so on… Now mostly the wounds are of shrapnel nature,” the chief doctor said.

On February 24, Russia launched a special military operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine. The purpose of the special operation was declared to protect the Russian-speaking civilian population of Ukraine from genocide carried out with the use of military force, including heavy weapons.
