Russian senator: The West has been preparing Ukraine for a large-scale provocation against Russia

04.03.2022, Moscow.

Ukraine has been prepared to carry out a large-scale provocation against Russia, said Konstantin Dolgov, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy, on March 4, RIA Novosti reports.

“Ukraine has been prepared for provocations and, apparently, for a very serious and large-scale provocation against Russia,” Dolgov said.

According to him, the statement of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky about the possible refusal of Ukraine from the nuclear-free status was not accidental, as well as the lack of reaction to it from Western countries.

“There was a real threat that these weapons could be received by the Ukrainian leadership, including from Western allies,” the senator believes.

Dolgov added that Ukraine had already created risks for Russia in connection with its integration into NATO, but after Zelensky’s statement, the threat “gained  a qualitatively different level.”

On February 19, Zelensky said during the Munich Security Conference that Ukraine would initiate consultations within the framework of the Budapest Memorandum and consider the issue of abandoning the status of the nuclear-free country.

On February 22, the statement of the Ukrainian President was commented on by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said that the Kremlin “has heard” Zelensky’s words. Two days later, Russia launched a large-scale special military operation in Donbass.
