Syrian President’s Office: Syria was ready to recognize the DPR two months ago

23.02.2022, Damascus.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said he was ready to recognize the Donetsk People’s Republic two months before the latest developments, according to a statement of the Syrian leader’s palace office published on February 22.

During the visit of a Russian parliamentary delegation to Damascus led by Russian State Duma deputy Dmitry Sablin, which included representatives of the DPR, Syrian President Bashar Assad declared his readiness to recognize the Donetsk People’s Republic, the statement reads.

“The position of the Syrian Arab Republic is based on its conviction that the Ukrainian crisis is a problem created by Western countries led by the United States,” the statement reads.

The aim of this policy is to divide peoples and undermine Russia’s national security, the presidential office noted.

“Syria confirms that it is ready to work to build and strengthen relations with the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics in the context of common interests and mutual respect,” the statement reads.

Earlier, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said that the Arab republic supports Russia’s recognition of the DPR and LPR. However, Bashar al-Assad has not yet issued an official statement on the recognition of the republics of Donbass.
