Political scientist: Escalation took place because Ukraine became bargaining chip

22.02.2022, Moscow.

Ukraine’s inability to negotiate is due to instigation from the Western countries, said Igor Semenovsky, political scientist, candidate of legal sciences, assistant professor of the Department of Law of the Financial University at the Government of the Russian Federation in an interview to a correspondent of Rossa Primavera News Agency.

Semenovsky called the conflict in south-eastern Ukraine “simmering,” and he suggested that the failure of negotiation was the reason why it escalated. “Why is this happening? Because Ukraine is apparently becoming a bargaining chip, and a compromise cannot be achieved regarding security guarantees for the status of Ukraine, Russia, the Warsaw Treaty countries, the USA, the Soviet Union, including the matter of negotiations themselves, a crucial issue for peaceful resolution in Ukraine,” the political scientist commented.

The expert noted that the words and actions of the key Western politicians on the Ukrainian crisis are inconsistent. “Biden is saying that Minsk agreements must be followed, and at the same time the US actions suggest that it is supplying lethal weapons to Ukraine for attacking the Donbass republics, which is now taking place,” Semenovsky said, adding that the leaders of France and Germany behave similarly, thus pushing Ukraine to violate the Minsk agreements and consequently to the conflict.

“Everything is done to make Russia defend its citizens and compatriots living in the DPR and the LPR,” the political scientist stressed.

Over the recent days, the Ukrainian army has been shelling the positions of the People’s Militia and the towns and cities in the LDPR along the contact line. At the same time, the Western leaders accused Russia of shelling the territory of Donbass in order to blame the Ukrainian military, saying that Russia allegedly makes an excuse to start the war.

Meanwhile, since early November the West has been making groundless accusations that Russia prepared an invasion of Ukraine. The information campaign started with a number of articles in major Western outlets, followed by statements of top US and NATO officials and all their allies.
