Expert compares the crisis in Donbass to the Cuban Missile Crisis

21.02.2022, Moscow.

The current Donbas crisis resembles the Cuban Missile Crisis, and is unlikely to develop into a third world war, said a columnist for the network publication Ukraina.ru Vladimir Skachko in his comment to Rossa Primavera News Agency.

According to the expert, Russia’s intervention in the war in Donbass does not necessarily mean a big war in Europe. For example, in Syria, the Russian intervention has put an end to ISIS (organization banned in Russia), “and no one even dug in.”

“It is not for nothing that Russia in the presence of the Belarusian president checked and now continues to check the readiness of its missile forces,” Skachko believes.

Poland and NATO, in his opinion, are unlikely to directly intervene to the current conflict.

“It will be worse if it develops into a full-scale third world war… Then it’s all over. But what is happening now is very similar to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962,” the expert said.

He recalled that then there was a gradual confrontation between the United States and the USSR and the “escalation of psychosis”, then all this resulted in the Cuban Missile Crisis, when opponents stood up against each other with missiles.

“We thought about it and decided not to fight. The opponents went in different directions, and for 30 years there really  was the Cold War without hot attempts. If there were any conflicts in which the Soviet Union or the United States took part, they did not concern each other. Each of them fought somewhere on the side,” Skachko explained.

The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 was a sharp aggravation of the confrontation between the USSR and the United States due to the deployment of Soviet missile weapons in Cuba. This was preceded by the deployment of American missiles in Turkey and Italy.

The world was on the brink of nuclear war. However, at the end of October, negotiations between the USSR and the United States began in New York with the participation of Cuba and the UN Secretary General.

As a result, the Government of the USSR agreed to withdraw its missiles from the territory of Cuba in exchange for assurances from the US authorities that the territorial integrity of the island would be respected, as well as guarantees of non-interference in the internal affairs of this country. In addition, the United States confidentially announced the withdrawal of its missiles from the territory of Turkey and Italy.

On February 17 of this year, the situation in Donbass sharply worsened. In particular, the intensity of shelling of the territory of the republics from the Ukrainian side has increased. It is reported that the Ukrainian army is shelling the territory of Donbass, including with the use of heavy weapons.

On February 18, the authorities of the DPR and LPR promptly announced the evacuation of civilians to Russia. About 36 thousand people arrived in the Rostov region during only one day. It is planned to take out much more. As reported, about 700 thousand people want to evacuate only from the DPR.

Yesterday, on February 19, the authorities of the LPR and the DPR announced a general mobilization.
