The US and NATO need such agreements that drive Russia into a corner. Opinion

The US and NATO responses to Russia’s proposals on security guarantees demonstrate a lack of desire to address the real issues of European security in essence; instead, there is a desire to limit Russia’s freedom of action as much as possible, including on its own territory, Rossa Primavera News Agency editorial published on February 2 reads.

Earlier, on February 2, the Spanish newspaper El Pais published the full text of written answers from the US and NATO member countries to Russia’s proposals on a new collective security treaty in Europe. In their responses, the US and NATO refused to discuss with Russia the key issues of the inadmissibility of further NATO expansion to the east and the redeployment of NATO troops to Russia’s borders.

“The texts of the US and NATO responses boil down to the general message that the blame for the current aggravation of relations between Russia and NATO lies entirely on the Russian side. Speaking from a position of imagined moral superiority, NATO is essentially making a series of unilateral demands on Russia.

In fact, NATO diplomats accuse Russia of undermining the European security architecture through the violation of previous treaty commitments. Active US efforts to undermine the system of arms control and European security treaties are predictably not mentioned at all.

Instead, Russia is urged to unilaterally implement treaties that the US has already de facto abandoned. This includes the withdrawal of the USA from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. The NATO’s responses are also indicating its readiness to sign additional treaties, which will largely limit not NATO’s freedom of action near Russia’s borders, but Russia’s ability to move its troops across its own territory, including in response to unfriendly actions by the alliance.

Calls for so-called de-escalation directed exclusively at Russia indicate that the United States and NATO are not interested in this de-escalation. They are interested in further escalating tensions and chaos in the region in order to impose a provocation on Russia that it could not help but respond to, in order to then call Russia the aggressor. This approach to the negotiations makes them senseless.”
