Kurginyan: Global capitalism will “choke on its own achievements”

The very essence of capitalism inevitably implies that it will “choke on its own achievements” and destroy itself, said philosopher, political scientist, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on November 14 in his analytical program The Meaning of the Game.

To illustrate this point, Sergey Kurginyan refers to The Mathematics of a Dream, a chapter from the 1908 novel The Iron Heel by Jack London, where the author clearly explains that capitalism’s nature requires underdeveloped countries with poorly developed industries, “where it could get rid of that unconsumed surplus”.

Moreover, taking into account the limited number of states on Earth, sooner or later the environment should become relatively “homogeneous” – undeveloped countries will cease to exist, it will be no longer possible to rob them, and then capitalism will begin to self-destruct, explains the political scientist.

“Here comes the idea that belongs to Rosa Luxemburg and many other thinkers of socialism, who said that the issue is not only about how the working class or proletariat will fight (this is one part of it), the issue is about the capitalist system itself. Even if the working class does not fight, the system will begin to crumble anyway,” recalled Kurginyan.

The philosopher stresses that he is not an advocate of this model, and that its nuances could be modified due to the fact that there have been many others since the book’s publication.

The model that I’m talking about is basic, it shows that global capitalism, having become global, can choke on its own achievements, that it will not be able to survive its own successes – this is the underlying idea here,” explained Kurginyan.

The fact that this model shows that the system will not be able to survive its successes, and not its defeats is the key here, believes the political scientist. In this regard, Kurginyan recalled the 2008 crisis, when “the monetary emission somewhat dealt with the issue in the short term” but did not resolve the problem globally.

This fundamental problem that exists within capitalism, as Kurginyan views it, is at the root of the situation currently developing around the coronavirus, which amazes with “its strangeness, its paradox, its chaos, its counter-productiveness.
