Russia names difference in Western attitude towards militants in Syria and Afghanistan

The Western countries are turning a blind eye to the growing number of child marriages in terrorist-occupied Idlib in Syria, Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Chumakov said at a Security Council meeting, REGNUM news agency reported on September 16.

Western countries apply double standards to the Syrian government and terrorist groups in Idlib, Chumakov said. “Which [terrorist groups – translator’s mote], by the way, are forgiven even despite the fact that, according to UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund – Rossa Primavera News Agency], the number of early and child marriages is growing in the enclave,” the diplomat noted.

According to him, the rights of women and girls in the Idlib enclave are of much less concern to “their Western colleagues” than in Afghanistan. “Double standards again,” the diplomat stated.

The Idlib de-escalation zone is the last militant enclave on the Syrian territory. The largest group in the region is the pro-Turkish Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (organization banned in Russia).
