Lavrov: Europe’s diplomacy is based on the principle of presumption of guilt of Russia

31.05.2021, Moscow.

The European Union prefers unfounded accusations like “highly likely” to an honest and equal dialogue with Russia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, opening a conference on Russia-EU relations on May 31.

According to him, the sanctions of the West against Russia are illegitimate, because they are based not on facts, but on speculation and unsubstantiated accusations. However, these unilateral sanctions of the European Union “based on arbitrary attribution rules at the EU’s discretion” keep multiplying, he said.

With regard to Russia, “The presumption of innocence has been replaced with the presumption of guilt by default,” Lavrov stressed.

As a fresh example, the head of the Foreign Ministry reminded of the statement of the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who said that the emergency landing of the Ryanair flight in Minsk could not have happened without the knowledge or “silent consent of Moscow.”

Two days later, Chairman of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee Norbert Röttgen made a similar statement.
