Tu-22M3 strike bombers deployed at Khmeimim airbase for the first time

Three long-range strategic Tu-22M3 bombers were deployed at an airbase in Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry press service informed on May 25.

“The aircraft of this type were deployed at the Khmeimim airfield for the first time,” the statement of ministry’s press service reads.

It is noted that the crews of the bombers will get practical skills of flying over new areas by undertaking training exercises over the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The Defense Ministry points out that the aircraft will return to the place of permanent deployment on the territory of Russia after completing these training exercises.

The ministry also informs that the deployment of the long-range bombers at the Khmeimim airbase became possible due to the extension of the runway. The Defense Ministry points out that all types of aircraft that are in service with the Russian Air Force can land and be serviced at the Russian base in Syria.

On May 23, the Russian Centre for reconciliation of opposing sides in the Syrian Arab Republic said that on the eve of the Syrian presidential election, militants of the terrorist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group (organization banned in Russia) intend to commit a provocation in western Idlib province.
