LPR: Ukrainian army shells residential areas near the contact line

17.05.2021, Lugansk.

The Ukrainian army caused a tense situation on the contact line by systematically shelling the villages and towns of the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), a LPR representative to the Joint Centre for Ceasefire Control and Coordination (JCCCC) Viktor Matveyev said on May 17.

“The situation is tense now, the Ukrainian side provokes the LPR People’s Militia by all means,” Matveyev said. In his opinion, the Ukrainian side is trying to undermine the ceasefire by its shelling. Molodezhnoye, Zolotoye-5, Kalinovo-Borshchevatoye, and Kalinovo villages and towns came under the fire of the Ukrainian troops.

The officer stressed that despite the disengagement of forces, LPR servicemen regularly reported the presence of Ukrainian soldiers at abandoned positions, from where they conduct surveillance.

Matveyev mentioned the Ukrainian positions are in close proximity to Zolotoye-5 village, one of whose streets is 700-800 meters from Ukrainian trenches. “Several families stayed there. They don’t want to leave,” the officer explained.
