17.05.2021, Moscow.

Russia and the Soviet Union made a decisive contribution to the fight against colonialism, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on May 17 during a press conference on the 60th anniversary of the independence of Sierra Leone.

Lavrov congratulated Sierra Leone Foreign Minister David Francis and emphasized Russia’s special role in the fight against colonialism.

“I want first of all to congratulate all the people of Sierra Leone on the anniversary of independence, which was celebrated on April 27 this year. Russia, the Soviet Union, our country as a whole made a serious, I would say decisive contribution in support of the fight against colonialism,” Lavrov said.

He noted that it was the Soviet Union that initiated the UN declaration on the granting of independence to countries and peoples.

Lavrov also recalled that relations between Russia and Sierra Leone have always been “traditionally friendly. In January 2022, it will be 60 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.”

Francis, for his part, confirmed that his country’s relations with Russia remain friendly and mutually beneficial. And, after his appointment as foreign minister, he planned his first foreign visit to Moscow.
