Kurginyan: Sooner or later Turkey will show its anti-Russian face

20.03.2021, Aleksandrovkoye.

Sooner or later, Russian and Turkish national interests will lead to irreconcilable differences between these two countries, said political scientist, leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on March 18 in an interview to the 24 TV Armenian TV channel.

Existing contradictions show how much is happening in different regions around the world where Russia and Turkey have competing interests, noted Kurginyan. “Everything I see tells me about it. Everything that is happening in Libya indicates this, I also find everything that happened in the Transcaucasus speaks to be indicative,” said the leader of the Essence of Time movement, stressing that few in Russia share this point of view.

According to the political scientist, if rapprochement between Russia and Turkey were possible, it would be much more beneficial to Russia than rapprochement with Armenia, but sooner or later these relations will come to an end.

“I am convinced that sooner or later the truth will prevail and Turkey will show its true anti-Russian face,” said Kurginyan. Then, “it will be necessary for Russia to shift its moderate, and restrained pro-Turkish position to an anti-Turkish policy under pressure from Turkey.” Moreover, Russia will do this only under external pressure, said Kurginyan.

Such a shift will be tragic. It will change the constants of Russian politics. However, according to the political scientist, it is inevitable. Kurginyan drew a parallel between Russia’s relations with Turkey and the West.

Russia wants, and always wanted… rapprochement with the West, an embrace with the West. What happened? Russia wanted it more and more, and instead the West has given Russia such a cold shoulder that everything is different now, ” explained the expert, stressing that he himself had always opposed Russia’s movement towards the West.

On March 15, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that in Syria, Turkey defended the interests of the EU and NATO. Notably, anti-Assad militant groups continue to operate mainly on Turkish-controlled territory despite of all the statements made by Turkey.

One of the latest incidents happened when the Syrian army destroyed a petroleum storage facility that belonged to militants under Turkey’s protection. In response, Turkey sent Russia a signal to stop such attacks.
