Political scientist: Ukraine does not ask the West for anything in exchange for concessions regarding Motor Sich

12.03.2021, Kiev.

There were no promises of investment to Ukraine for its refusal to transfer Motor Sich to China, the director of the Kiev Center for Political Studies and Crisis Analysis, political analyst Mykhail Pogrebinskiy said to Rossa Primavera News Agency on March 12.

“The leadership [in Kiev] does not act at all, as any country would act in this situation. All right, we can do it, tell me what you get in return,” Mikhail Pogrebinskiy commented on the nationalization of Motor Sich, which had previously been sold to China.

“We already had a history when Albright [Madeleine Albright, US Secretary of State under President Bill Clinton – Rossa Primavera News Agency’s editorial note] forbade Ukraine to participate in the construction of Bushehr project [nuclear power plant in Iran, which was built from 1975 to 2010 – Rossa Primavera News Agency’s editorial note]. Ukraine refused. They promised it would receive billion-dollar investments, etc., but it received nothing,” the expert said.

The political scientist pointed out that the current government in Ukraine is so weak that it does not ask anything from the West for its concessions at all.

“They have no idea what to do with this enterprise, where tens of thousands of people could work and pay taxes to the budget, these people would be employed and so on, they have no solution. And the US elites won’t provide them with any work, and Ukraine can’t,” Mikhail Pogrebinskiy explained.

On March 12, a representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry addressed the Ukrainian Government and demanded that it consider the interests of the Chinese investors who bought 56% of Motor Sich shares.

A day earlier, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Aleksey Danilov announced Kiev’s decision to return the company to state ownership. The Ukrainian representative promised that the nationalization process of Motor Sich would not violate the constitution and that investors’ expenses would be compensated.
