Civil conflict in Donbass and corruption are obstacles in Ukraine’s path to NATO, US Charge d’Affaires a.i. in Ukraine Kristina Kvien said on November 17 at the Dialogue on Reforms: On the Road to Vilnius online forum in Kiev.
Kvien stated that Ukraine faces two challenges in its Euro-Atlantic integration: the first is aggression against the Crimea on several fronts, including annexation of the Crimea; aggression in Donbas and disinformation. The second challenge is the fight against corruption. And both challenges are equally important, she added.
Kristina Kvien noted the likelihood that judicial reform in Ukraine will roll back under the influence of Ukrainian oligarchs.

The US Charge d’Affaires a.i. urged Zelenskyi to fulfill his promise to complete judicial reform in order for Ukraine to “rise to the level of European countries.”
The constitutional crisis in Ukraine became more acute on October 27 after the Constitutional Court of Ukraine (CCU) adopted the law abolishing criminal punishment for incorrect or absent declaration of the officials. Thus, according to western partners of Ukraine, the CCU questioned the whole anticorruption infrastructure created in Ukraine in recent years.
The Civil War in Ukraine began in 2014 after the coup d’état, when people praising Bandera, whose ideology implied the genocide of the Russian population living in Ukraine came to power in Ukraine.
After a series of decisions of the new Ukrainian government towards the genocide of the Russian population throughout Ukraine, referendums on self-determination were held in Donetsk and Lugansk regions in March 2014. As a result of the latter, the DPR and LPR were established. In response, Kiev began to attack the civilians of Donbass using air forces and heavy artillery, declaring an anti-terrorist operation against millions of civilians. Residents of the DPR and LPR began to form people’s militias to protect themselves from the Ukrainian army’s offensive.
