Kurginyan explains when Putin dramatically changed

10.11.2020, Moscow.

Putin changed dramatically in 2007, when it became clear that Russia could never become part of the West, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on November 7 on the Right to Know program on the TVС channel.

“Putin finally realized that there was no way to become part of Western civilization and enter any special kind of relations with Europe around 2008. This was the period when Putin dramatically changed, in 2007. You could see this in his eyes, his rhetoric, and changes in practical policy,” Kurginyan explained. In 2001, however, the Russian president, the political scientist believes, was “absolutely sure” that becoming part of the West was possible.

After that, the Russian elite did not completely abandon its pro-Western trajectory, Kurginyan added. He explained that the elite reproduces its ideas in subsequent generations. The project of becoming part of Europe existed in the elite of the Soviet security services when Yuri Andropov was the chairman of the KGB. This is when the elite began its backroom dealings with Germany and initiated the construction of gas pipelines from the USSR to Europe.

“My advisor, whom I loved very much, Vladimir Aleksandrovich Kryuchkov said that in 1979 the decision to reunite Germany had been already made; I believe him, this is when it was clear that we were going to reject the southern part [of the USSR] and become part of Europe, having the largest population along with our nuclear weapons, the US would retreat, and thus we would implement Trotsky’s plan,” the expert explained the idea.

According to the leader of Essence of Time, the Russian elite’s desire to become part of Western civilization is “an extremely fantastic and dangerous delusion.” He added that the policy of entering the West will continue “until we catastrophically encounter the impossibility of anything of the sort. And then not only our policy will change, for it had changed earlier, after the Munich speech, but also our political elite will change.” According to the expert, this is a question of two or three years.

In his speech at the Munich Security Conference on February 10, 2007, the Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the unipolar model is impossible in the world today. Putin noted that the USA, in terms of law, had gone beyond its national borders in economy, politics, and humanitarian issues, imposing its own law system.
