The union of Russia and Belorussia is the flagship of the integration processes on the post-Soviet territory, the Speaker of the Council of Federation Valentina Matvienko said on April 1, RIA Novosti reports.

“The Union State has become a real flagship of the integration processes on the post-Soviet territory,” the Speaker said on the eve of the Russian and Belorussian People Unity Day celebrated on April 2. Matvienko spoke about the common culture and spiritual traditions of the two fraternal nations.

According to the Russian politician, the people of Russia and Belorussia were heroes and brothers-in-arms during the Great Patriotic war. Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Victory this year, we must show special respect to the role of the Belorussian people both in the war itself and in defending the truth about its history.

The integration of the two states is taking place through the implementation of economic, scientific and technological programs. The parties are unifying their legal frameworks, and they cooperate in military technology.

According to Matvienko, Belorussia and Russia have “common high humanistic values and ties of friendship.” The Speaker believes that the Union State will further develop based on democracy and equality.

On April 2, 1996, the President of Russia Boris Yeltsin and the President of Belorussia Aleksandr Lukashenko signed a treaty establishing the Community of Russia and Belorussia. One year later, a treaty establishing the Union of Belarus and Russia was signed.
