Iran is preparing a non-aggression pact with the Persian Gulf countries, Al Arabiya reports on May 26.
The news channel quotes the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Mohammad Javad Zarif, talking about Iran’s proposal to sign a non-aggression pact with the countries of the region, as well as Tehran’s readiness to deter any economic or military aggression. Zarif said this at a press conference during a visit to Baghdad.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Ali Alhakim spoke in support for his Iranian counterpart, and he is ready to mediate between Iran and the US. He stressed the futility of the economic blockade against Iran.
Relations between Iran and the US deteriorated sharply after the US withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal and imposed a ban on Iranian oil.
The US is strengthening its military presence in the region.
On May 24, US President Donald Trump approved the decision to send two thousand troops to the Middle East along with the Abraham Lincoln Nuclear Carrier Strike Group, which was sent to the Persian Gulf earlier.
Iranian Foreign Ministry calls such actions as “a threat to global peace and stability.”
Editorial comment
The US militarization of Iran’s border area is very similar to NATO’s actions against Russia. First, you need to come up with some kind of a threat, then take certain steps to strengthen your military presence in the region of interest.
Similarly, in early May, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) spread information about alleged Iranian aggression being prepared against US forces in the Middle East.
Immediately after that, warships led by an aircraft carrier were sent to the region, while countries like Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Pakistan, some Central Asian countries, Jordan and Saudi Arabia are in the US CENTCOM zone of influence. The US CENTCOM’s advanced command and control centers are located in Qatar at the Es Salia military base, and at the Combined Air Operation Center (CAOC) at the Al Udeid Air Base. The US Army Forces Central Comand (ARCENT) is located in Kuwait.
In this situation, signing or not signing a non-aggression pact proposed by the Iranian Foreign Ministry will provide not only an understanding of each country’s position on a possible military conflict between the US and Iran, but also offer certain guarantees between the signatories not participating in conflict.
