Preliminary election results to EU Parliament published

Preliminary election results to the EU Parliament showed that an alliance of the two largest parties lost its joint majority, the EU Parliament website reports on May 27.

The European People’s Party (EPP) is still in the first place based on the number of seats won in the EU Parliament, with 179 seats. The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) follows in second place with 150 seats.

There is a total of 751 seats in the EU Parliament and 376 or more votes are required in order to adopt a law by a simple majority. According to preliminary data, EPP and S&D have 329 votes in total.

Previously, EPP had 217, and S&D held 186 seats with 403 in total.

The EU Parliamentary elections were held on May 23-26.

In March, European sociologists correctly predicted a decrease in the number of seats in the EU Parliament for the EPP and S&D. Liberal and nationalist parties were predicted to strengthen their positions.
