Lavrov: U.S. is creating Kurdish quasi-state in Syria

14.10.2018, Moscow.

The USA, with help from its allies, is attempting to create an illegal state on Syrian territory, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said on October 12 during a press-conference.

During the meeting with the journalists, the Russia’s foreign policy chief said that “absolutely unacceptable things” are occurring on territory belonging to the Syrian Arab Republic, on land to the east of Euphrates. He said that the US is using its Syrian allies, “the Kurds, first and foremost”, to create a quasi-state.

He said that the US is trying to organize “normal living conditions” on these territories, aiding the return and settlement of refugees, and establishing alternative government bodies in parallel to “the legitimate government bodies of the Syrian Arab Republic.”

Sergey Lavrov noted that the US is not willing to take any steps towards aiding the return of refugees to territories governed by the republic’s legitimate authorities.

Referring to US actions, Lavrov said that there could be only one reason for such behavior: to create a prelude to a new state on this territory.

“Maybe, it will again be that dangerous game with Kurdistan, with the idea of a Greater Kurdistan”, the foreign minister concluded.

On February 13, 2018 Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov also said that Washington is taking very dangerous steps towards establishing an autonomous territory on the East bank of Euphrates. And earlier, on February 7, 2018, while speaking to the finalists of the “Leaders of Russia” competition, Lavrov stated that the US has plans to divide Syria and that Russian leadership is aware of these plans.
