Expert: USA tries to deprive Syria of its economic basis

23.05.2018, Moscow.

The USA is trying to deprive the Syrian government of any economic basis, the President of the Center for Strategic Communications Dmitry Abzalov said on May 23 commenting the statement made by the Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad about a the deliberate shelling of Syrian oil fields by the USA and the Western coalition, RT reports.

“This is an attempt to control not only the territory near Iraq, but also the country’s economic currents. This is an attempt to put pressure on al-Assad and to prevent Syria’s economic recovery,” the expert said, noting that the USA is not interested in the normalization of the economic situation in Syria.

Abzalov also added that if “the recovery begins, it will bring about a transition to the process of forming Syrian political institutes and its Constitution. This means, it will be demonstrated in practice how a country can be restored through a dialogue with its leadership, but not through the decapitation of the whole system, as the USA usually does. For the USA, this poses additional risks; this is an unfavorable option, and the USA will do anything, including economically, in order to undermine any basis for the recovery.”

Earlier on May 23, the Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad made a statement in which he accused the Western coalition forces of having deliberately destroyed the oilfield infrastructure in Syria, “US Coalition bombed oil wells in Syria so that they would not benefit the state and for us to spend millions in repairs.”
