Russian FM: USA emboldens Kurds to reject dialogue with Syria

22.01.2018, Moscow.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergei Lavrov commented on the Turkish military’s operation Olive Branch during his press-conference on January 22, a Rossa Primavera News Agency correspondent reports.

The Foreign Minister said that Russia calls for restraint and respect towards sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR).

Lavrov noted that the USA had chosen the course towards forming alternative authorities on a significant part of Syria a long time ago. With this policy in mind, Washington carries out both open and unofficial weaponry supplies into Syria for arming units which Washington is in cooperation with, including Free Syrian Army that relies on Kurdish militia. According to Sergey Lavrov, in development of this policy, an announcement was made a few days ago about the creation of certain security forces on the Syrian border with Turkey and Iraq. “Though some rather clumsy statements were indeed made to refute this point, the whole activity towards bringing the border under control has, in fact, continued,” he noted.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that USA had long been trying to embolden Kurds, which they are in cooperation with, against a dialogue with SAR. Washington actively encouraged and continues to encourage Kurdish separative spirit.”

Lavrov believes that the reason behind such behaviour from the US is “either a lack of understanding of the whole situation, or a conscious provocation”.
