Former Secretary of Defense: Trump has made the US-Russia relationship more complicated

15.05.2017, USA.

The relationship between Russia and the United States has become even more complicated since Trump’s election, the former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said on May 15 on the air of CBS News, Interfax news agency reports.

“I think one of the things that has surprised people has been that the relationship between the United States and Russia has in fact deteriorated since the election,” the former official said. He believes that the results of the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit clearly demonstrate that “there really hasn’t been any slack cut for the Russians”.

Robert Gates believes that Moscow was indeed involved in the US presidential campaign in 2016. However, that was just a fair response to America’s interference with the Russian election in 2012 and its involvement in the ‘color’ revolutions in Ukraine, Georgia, and Eastern Europe.

After Trump came into office, Russian President Putin has repeatedly emphasized in his interviews to Russian media that the bilateral relationship between Moscow and Washington has deteriorated. According to the Russian leader, currently, especially after the missile attack against the government airbase in Syria, he trusts Trump’s administration at neither the working level nor, still less, the military one.

Vladimir Putin also made the point that he will not allow any ‘color’ revolutions to happen in Russia. According to the Russian leader, these ‘projects’ initiated by the West seriously destabilize various regions worldwide. “Of course we must not allow anything of this sort and we will, by all means, take appropriate actions in Russia and support our partners in the CSTO,” President said.
