Riga Mayor fined again for speaking Russian

The Mayor of Riga, Nil Ushakov, wrote on April 26 on his personal Facebook page that the Latvian State Language Center (Latvian: VVC) imposed another fine on him for communicating with people in Russian.

“You are not going to believe this, the VVC fined me again for 50 euro. This time, the reason was that when Russian-speaking schoolchildren asked me questions in Russian at an unofficial meeting, I answered them in Russian, too. The event was shown online on my personal Facebook page,” said Nil Ushakov. “According to the VVC, an official must not reply to students in their native language even during informal communication”.

More than 800 houses damaged in the DPR by Ukrainian shelling in the last three months

“599 private houses and 238 multi-apartment buildings were destroyed during the first quarter of this year in the Donetsk People’s Republic as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian army”, according to the data released by the press service of the Ministry of Construction Industry of the Donetsk People’s Republic. More than 25,000 houses were damaged over the entire duration of military operations on the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic: 20,700 thousand private houses and 4,745 apartment buildings.

The "Immortal regiment" will take place in Jūrmala on May 9

The “Immortal regiment” march will take place in Jūrmala on May 9, stated the Head of the “For Independent Latvia” movement, Jānis Kuzins on April 25, according to TASS.

“Most veterans are no longer at the age and state of health which would allow them to attend the Victory Day celebration in Riga; therefore, we will hold the May 9 memorial in Jūrmala with the help of the ‘Immortal regiment’”, stated Jānis Kuzins.
