Back when I was 9-10 years old, my grandfather and I were walking home near our home village. A lightning flashed in the distance. My grandpa started counting and when he counted to 8 the thunder rolled. When we got home right before the rain started pouring, I gave him a questioning look. He explained that the speed of light is almost instant, while sound travels at the speed of 330 meters per second. By counting one can determine how far away a thunderstorm is. Who would have known that his lesson will help me not only earn my first “A” in physics class, but also determine the distance to the enemy’s artillery!
