Was it impossible? Orban names deadline for sending Western troops to Ukraine

22.03.2024, Moscow.

Military personnel from Western countries may be sent to Ukraine in the coming months. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said this in an interview with Radio Kossuth on 22 March.

Orban noted that it was recently considered impossible, but now it has become commonplace that Germany was ready to hand over missile systems to Ukraine to strike Moscow. The Germans, he said, had initially offered equipment and helmets, but now they are ready to provide more serious weapons.

In the spring of 2023, Orban opined that the countries of Europe were in constant tension over a possible war with Russia. He claimed that the West was gradually increasing the supply of lethal weapons to Kiev and might even introduce “peacekeeping troops.”

French President Macron suggested the idea of sending a military contingent to Ukraine in February at an international conference in support of Kiev, but his proposal did not receive support. According to the Le Monde newspaper, the French authorities started discussing the possibility of sending the military to Ukraine as early as the summer of 2023. In February 2024, Macron narrowly announced a possible dispatch to Odessa this year.

According to Ukrainian MP Aleksey Goncharenko (included in the list of terrorists and extremists on the territory of the Russian Federation), France is said to be actively preparing a contingent of about two thousand military personnel to be sent to the Ukrainian regions bordering Belarus to replace Ukrainian units.

The Kremlin carefully monitors the possible deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine and warns of the possible irreparable consequences of such an action. The head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergey Naryshkin, also noted that France was preparing a military contingent for the mission in Ukraine.

In an interview with Dmitriy Kiselyov, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that the entry of European troops into Ukraine would not affect the course of events on the military field, but would only lead to severe consequences for Kiev.

Responding to Macron’s remarks that France had no red lines in dealing with Russia, Putin said that Moscow would also have no restrictions in dealing with states that adopt such an approach.
