The People’s Militia of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR PM) opened fire at positions of the Ukrainian army in response to shelling by Ukrainian militants, the DPR PM press service reported on February 17.

According to the DPR PM, the Ukrainian punitive forces violated the ceasefire four times during the day. Members of the 36th Marine Brigade opened fire at the villages of Kominternovo and Oktyabr. They fired 42 grenades, and small arms fire was also used.

Soldiers of the 53rd Brigade fired 20 120mm mortar shells, which hit the area near the villages of Petrovskoye and Novolaspa.

“In order to protect civilians, our defenders were forced to retaliate to suppress enemy firepower,” the press service said.

The LPR also reported several cases of shelling of the territory of the republic.

The Ukrainian army denied the information about the shelling, accusing the Donbas military of violating the ceasefire. The Ukrainian and British media reported that the republics’ military shelled a kindergarten in the village of Luganskaya, which is under Kiev’s control.
