The election of Gabriel Boric, the candidate of the Approve Dignity left-wing coalition, as president of Chile, is a historic victory for the Chilean people, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel wrote on his Twitter page on December 19.
The Cuban leader stressed that he aims to increase cooperation with Chile.
“From the bottom of our hearts, we congratulate Gabriel Boric on his election as president of Chile as a result of the historic victory of the people. We reaffirm our desire to expand bilateral relations and cooperation between peoples and governments,” Díaz-Canel wrote.
Chile held its second round of presidential elections on Sunday. According to the Election Service of the republic, after counting votes from 99.66% of precincts, Boric won 55.86%. His opponent, the ultra-conservative José Antonio Kast won 44.14% of the votes. Kast conceded defeat.
