Mexico reminds US of illicit weapons trafficking

Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs representatives expressed concern over massive illegal shipments of weapons from the United States to Mexico, Xinhua reported on August 10.

On Thursday, August 8, the US adopted a memorandum in which it named Mexico one of the 22 major countries associated with the production and transit of drugs. US President Donald Trump threatened to take actions if Mexico does nothing against illicit drug trafficking.

In response, on August 10, the Mexican Foreign Ministry explained that drug trafficking is a problem for the entire region, as it involves transnational criminal networks, and that the cooperation of different countries is needed to address this issue.

Mexican diplomats also reminded their US colleagues of the massive illicit weapons shipments from the United States to Mexico.

On March 14, Donald Trump said that Mexico had lost control over the drug cartels. According to the US president, the US administration is considering the possibility of recognizing the Mexican drug cartels as terrorist groups.
