Malaysian Prime Minister doubts Russia’s involvement in MH-17 disaster

There is too much politics in the investigation of the MH-17 crash, the Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad said on May 30 talking to Japanese journalists, Malay Mail reports.

He pointed out the high military professionalism of the Russian army. “I don’t think very highly disciplined party is responsible for launching the missile,” Mohamad said.

“From the very beginning, we see too much politics in it and the idea was not to find out how this happened but seems to be concentrated on trying to pin it to the Russians,” Mohamad noted.

He stressed that the Malaysian government agrees with the investigation commission’s conclusion that the flight was shot down by a Buk anti-aircraft missile. However, the Prime Minister believes, this does not prove Russia’s fault.

“They are accusing Russia but where is the evidence?” Mohamad said. He stressed that similar missiles were produced in Ukraine, too.

“You need strong evidence to show it was fired by the Russians, it could be by the rebels in Ukraine, it could be Ukrainian government because they too have the same missile,” the head of the Malaysian government said.

He stressed that Malaysia remains unaware why it was not included in the commission to investigate the black boxes of the MH-17 flight.

A Boeing 777 flight MH-17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down on July 17, 2014, over Donbass, killing all the 298 people on board.

An international commission headed by the Netherlands is investigating the catastrophe. According to its report, the Buk that fired the missile to shoot the Boeing down had been brought to Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) territory from Russia, and it was returned afterwards.

Russia has repeatedly said that the accusations are groundless. In September 2018, the Ministry of Defense held a press conference to demonstrate the invalidity of the evidence presented by the Ukrainian side.
