Ukrainian Foreign Minister refuses to attend Council of Europe meeting

16.05.2019, Kiev.

The Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Pavel Klimkin, refused to take part in the Foreign Ministers’ meeting of the Council of Europe, Dmitry Kuleba, permanent representative of Ukraine to the Council of Europe told the Ukrainian European Truth News Portal on May 16.

The event is taking place in the city of Helsinki on May 16 and 17.

“The minister has already canceled his visit to Helsinki, and for the first time in many years Ukraine will not be represented at the minister’s level ,” Kuleba said.

According to media, Klimkin decided to cancel the trip to Helsinki because of the position of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on Russia. This decision opens the way for Russia to return the right to vote in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

Earlier, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister said that if the Council of Europe returns the right to vote in PACE to Russia, Kiev will refuse to comply with the Minsk agreements. The Russian Federation was deprived of the right to vote in PACE in 2014 as a result of the events in Ukraine and the reunification of Crimea with Russia.
