Donetsk People’s Republic leader: We will establish a Military Tribunal on the Kiev junta’s war crimes

23.02.2018, Donetsk.

A People’s Tribunal to condemn Kiev’s actions will be established in the DPR, the leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic Aleksandr Zakharchenko said on February 22, RIA Novosti reports.

The establishment of the People’s Tribunal is the DPR’s reaction to Poroshenko’s signing the Donbass Reintegration Act, Zakharchenko said in his interview to journalists. “In fact, this act legitimizing war crimes is a cart blanche for violating the Ukrainian Constitution and legislation.”

On February 20, Poroshenko signed the Donbass Reintegration Act, recognizing the DPR and the LPR as temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories under the “occupation” authority of the Russian Federation. A provision from the initial draft on the priority of the Minsk agreements was not included in the act. Also, the act will legitimize the use of the army in the east without a declaration of war.

Editorial comment

The DPR’s reaction is quite logical. Indeed, the act that Poroshenko has signed annuls the Minsk agreements, and it allows the Kiev authorities to wage an offensive war against Donbass. In this situation, the DPR must express an assessment of the Kiev junta’s actions and draw international attention to the breakdown of the negotiations.
