NATO is wary of competition from EU forces

10.10.2017, Romania.

The EU should not develop the same command structures as NATO, said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a press-conference in Romania on October 9, RIA Novosti reports.

“… We need to avoid EU developing command structures which are overlapping NATO command structures, and we have to make sure that what the EU does is complementary to what NATO does. So as long as we make sure that this is about complementing NATO, not competing with NATO, then we strongly welcome a stronger European defense” – says NATO Secretary General.

According to Stoltenberg, NATO welcomes stronger a European defense, but not competition between the EU and NATO.

The European Union decided to unite European countries by the end of 2017 to strengthen security, which would allow the structure to be financed out of the European Defense Fund. According to French President Emmanuel Macron, Europe needs a unified defense budget and military doctrine. The EU plans to create a rapid reaction force by 2020.
