The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the United States to release Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, according to a statement published on the ministry’s Telegram channel on January 3.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated, “In connection with confirmed information about the presence of Venezuelan President N. Maduro and his spouse in the United States, we firmly urge the US leadership to reconsider this position and release the lawfully elected president of a sovereign country and his spouse.” The ministry also spoke in favor of creating conditions for a diplomatic settlement of all disputed issues between the parties.
On January 3, according to US President Donald Trump, the US conducted a large-scale operation in Venezuela, during which Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured. The leader of the state specified that the couple was transported by helicopter to a military vessel.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto confirmed the position of the national leadership, demanding that Maduro be returned to the exercise of his powers and that his safety be ensured.
In addition, Trump did not rule out renewed strikes on Venezuela, noting that the operation had originally been planned earlier but was postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions.
Russia, for its part, expressed concern over US actions, condemned the interference, and supported the Venezuelan people and government, calling for the prevention of further escalation of the conflict.
