Russia currently struggles not only against Ukraine itself but against an international neo-Nazi movement that uses Ukrainian Nazism as a battering ram, said Fyodor Kaufman, co-author of the monograph Ukrainism, on November 25 during a book presentation in Mariupol at the Donetsk branch of the Volgograd Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Rossa Primavera News Agency wrote.
“Russia is now in conflict not with Ukraine and not with Ukrainian Nazism. Russia has started a comprehensive confrontation with international neo-Nazism, international fascism,” the historian said.
The collapse of the Soviet Union and the USSR’s defeat in the Cold War became a fascist revanche, and today the West openly discusses plans for the dismemberment of Russia, Kaufman noted. The heirs of the Nazis want a “final solution” to the Russian question, he emphasized.
“Russia is a very inconvenient country for the West. It is not needed in any form — not as an empire, not as the Soviet Union, not as a democracy,” the historian stressed.
He described a network of neo-Nazi organizations operating across the world. Right-wing or far-right parties are part of the governments of many countries. In Austria, the government is formed by the Freedom Party, created by former SS members; in Sweden, the ruling coalition includes the Sweden Democrats, founded by Swedish Nazis. This trend is especially pronounced in the Baltic states, where neo-Nazism has become a political mainstream.
The researcher emphasized that neo-Nazism in Ukraine is not limited to the Azov units (organization banned in Russia). The Ukrainian Armed Forces are totally Nazified, and now three corps have been created within them, based on neo-Nazi organizations similar to the SS troops.
“We constantly see that everywhere they appear, there are killings, torture, and practice ritual human sacrifices. They carry with them this cult of violence that has been forming in some way for several centuries,” the monograph’s author explained.
The researcher pointed to the historical roots of this phenomenon. Today’s Ukrainian neo-Nazis continue the tradition of the OUN (Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists) (organization banned in Russia) and UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) (organization banned in Russia), which collaborated with Hitler. They are heirs not only to the ideas of Bandera and Shukhevich but also to their methods. This anti-Russian sentiment and the so-called Ukrainism began to be created much earlier, back in the 19th century.
In the modern Ukrainian informational space, the image of Russians is dehumanized. Children’s books are published portraying Russians as “orcs,” “Muscovites,” and “Colorado potato beetles.” Thus, the Ukrainian population is being convinced that Russians are “non-humans” and thus anything can be done to them, Kaufman noted.
The historian recalled that on November 24 in Rostov-on-Don, a presentation of the multi-authored monograph “Ukrainism: Who constructed it and why” was held at the Don State Technical University in Rostov-on-Don. The monograph was written by members of Aleksandrovskoye commune of the Essence of Time movement and edited by political scientist Sergey Kurginyan.
He also noted that the first edition of the multi-authored monograph “Ukrainism: Who constructed it and why” was published in 2017. In March 2023, the researchers of Aleksandrovskoye commune presented the first two volumes of the second edition in Moscow.
In 2024–2025, a documentary series titled Ukrainism, based on the monograph, was released on the Zvezda TV channel.
