Incident with alleged Russian drone highly beneficial to Polish authorities

21.08.2025, Warsaw.

The incident with a drone explosion in eastern Poland is extremely advantageous for the country’s authorities, while the Korean inscriptions on the wreckage suggest that the provocation may have been staged by the Poles themselves, Rossa Primavera News Agency’s Poland Desk wrote on August 21.

On the night of August 20, a drone crashed and exploded in a cornfield in the village of Osiny, Lublin Voivodeship, eastern Poland. As a result of the incident, windows were blown out in several houses. The crash site is about 100 km from Poland’s border.

Even before all the circumstances were clarified, top Polish officials began blaming Russia. The first to speak out was Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski. “Another violation of our airspace from the east confirms that Poland’s most important mission within NATO is to defend its own territory. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will protest against this violation,” he said. Polish Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Paweł Wroński added that this would be a note of protest addressed to the Russian side.

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also accused Russia, “Russia is once again provoking NATO countries. After drone incidents in Romania, Lithuania, and Latvia, we are once again dealing with a Russian drone,” he declared.

Later, inconvenient details began to surface at the crash site. Lublin Voivodeship prosecutor Grzegorz Trusewicz stated that due to severe damage to the drone, it was impossible to determine the country of origin or the drone’s make. However, the largest remaining component, a part of the engine, bore inscriptions “probably in Korean.”

The prosecutor refused to comment on the defense minister’s statement about the drone’s alleged Russian origin, “I am obliged to provide information obtained at the scene,” he stressed.

Thus, at the time of their statements, neither Poland’s defense minister nor its foreign minister could have reliably known the drone’s origin. Why, then, did they so hastily and groundlessly blame Russia?

The reason lies in one of the central elements of Polish politics: the thesis that Poland’s mission is to serve as Europe’s “eastern shield” against the “Russian threat.” The country is actively militarizing and aims to build the EU’s strongest army. At the same time, Washington is pressuring EU states to support Ukraine with weapons purchased in the US, as well as with their own troops. The recent Washington meeting of EU leaders (the so-called “coalition of the willing”) gave this push, even though Poland did not participate.

This directly conflicts with Poland’s own strategy: the country helps Ukraine by transferring its outdated weapons and replacing them with new equipment from the US, South Korea, and other countries. Furthermore, there is political consensus in Poland against sending Polish troops into Ukraine. Poland categorically opposes this measure.

Therefore, Warsaw urgently needs to distance itself from the “coalition of the willing.” And the alleged Russian drone attack deep inside Polish territory provides the perfect pretext to justify its strategy of concentrating armaments and troops solely within the country. As the Polish Foreign Minister explicitly stated, “Poland’s most important mission within NATO is to defend its own territory.”

Of course, such an incident is also useful for domestic politics, once again reminding citizens of the “Russian threat” and the supposed necessity of spending 5% of GDP on militarization.

As for the Korean inscriptions on the drone, it should be noted that Poland has been actively cooperating with South Korea in the field of military technology. It has agreements for the delivery of about 1,000 South Korean K2 tanks and a contract for joint production of 239 mm CGR-080 rockets. South Korea also has its own drone production. Therefore, it is probable that the Poles themselves were involved in this incident, considering how many political benefits it brings them both internationally and domestically.
