The opposition’s attempt to recreate the Ukrainian Maidan scenario in Georgia has failed, stated Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze during a briefing on December 3.
“The ‘National Maidan’ in Georgia has failed, despite coordinated efforts,” emphasized Kobakhidze.
Earlier, the Prime Minister asserted that negotiations with the opposition are out of the question, as the opposition sacrifices Georgian youth at the behest of external “supervisors.”
The head of the government also noted that the lack of condemnation from European officials regarding systemic violence by protesters in Tbilisi undermines Georgian society’s trust in European political system.
On December 2, President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili called on schoolchildren to join the protests against the current government. However, Zourabichvili stopped attending the protests as soon as the unrest and crackdowns on protesters by police began.
On November 28, the opposition began protesting against Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s decision to the country’s EU membership talks. The talks are proposed to be postponed until 2028.
