Banning Guterres from entering Israel will not help the cause of peace

Israel’s declaring the UN secretary general persona non grata will not help the cause of peace, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on October 2.

Declaring a man persona non grata is the sovereign right of a country, Zakharova said. However, it will not help the cause of peace, she emphasized.

Washington is to be blamed for the lack of UN reaction to what is happening in the Middle East, which blocks the Security Council resolutions, Zakharova said. Botched actions of the Americans once again derailed diplomatic efforts, she said.

Tel Aviv banned UN Secretary General António Guterres from entering the country because he did not condemn the Iranian missile attack on Israel. The Secretary General only condemned the expansion of the conflict in the Middle East and called on the parties to cease fire.

Iran also, like Israel, accused the UN Security Council of inaction. According to the Iranian side, this has moved Tel Aviv to cross all red lines. Therefore, Iran had no choice but to retaliate.

Israel launched massive strikes on the infrastructure of the Shiite Hezbollah movement in Lebanon. Its leader, Sheikh Nasrallah, was killed in a bombing attack.

Iran retaliated with rocket attacks on Israeli territory. The Iranian side reported 180 ballistic missiles fired and military targets hit.

Israel said that most of the missiles were intercepted and the damage was minimal.
